Note: Again, this is taken straight from a PSA promotional brochure about
the 146. I've left off some of the pictures, but included a few for your
viewing pleasure.
EVOLUTION VS. REVOLUTION PSA revolutionized air travel back in 1949 with deregulated air fares 29 years before most other airlines offered them and more flights at convenient times. Since then, we have led the evolution of convenient air travel with innovative services and a high performance fleet. Being first in aircraft technology is a PSA habit. When the superbly quiet and efficient DC9 Super 80 first entered U.S. commercial service it flew in the colors of PSA. Now with 26 DC9 Super 80's combined with 20 Smiliners our passengers will enjoy the benefits of the most modern fleet among all major U.S. carriers. It just goes to show that while most airlines' aircraft move at about the same speed in the air, some airlines move faster in the area of better ideas. Even more frequent flights at even more convenient times - all because of PSA's new SMILINER As we add Smiliners to our fleet you'll find our service in some cities doubled in frequency, with conveniently timed new departures and arrivals added to the flight schedule. Credit Smiliner: as a 100-seat aircraft, it fits PSA's typical passenger load requirements like a glove. So eight or even ten Smiliner flights per day into many cities - instead of the four or five using larger capacity planes like the DC9 Super 80 - are as beneficial to PSA's operating efficiency as they are to your luxury of choice. Sometimes, both sides can win; thanks to Smiliner, this is one of them. The Smiliner's design ingenuity is all around you - even underneath you,
in its remarkably comfortable, remarkably space-efficient seats. Note
that there's almost a full yard of space between one seat back
and the next. And that you can stretch your legs under the seat ahead,
instead of jamming your knees against it. The center seat in each row of three is designed to fold down flat. We
plan to fill those center seats last on every flight, so when the
Smiliner isn't full you can enjoy the luxurious extra work or elbow space
normally provided only in First Class. Space to Spare... Your Smiliner seat stands a full 12 inches above the floor, creating more under-seat space than any other airliner can offer. Imagine the benefits in terms of extra footroom and space for your carry-on luggage. It's one of those little differences that at times can make all the difference. Space to Stow...
A seat designed with your body in mind Every seat in the Smiliner is a $1,000 exercise in advanced ergonomic design and painstakingly precise construction and upholstering. The engineers who created it borrowed from NASA studies in shaping the seat and backrest to the contours of the human body. Result: a deep sense of comfort. You body knows when it's being well taken care of. Remarkably swift, sure take-offs The Smiliner boasts one of the fastest climb rates of any commercial aircraft in the world; the combination of its four powerful engines and unique high-wing design, for instance, can lift the plane to 28,000 feet in under 17 minutes - swifter even than some much larger passenger jets. Strong performance, and dependable performance; Smiliner's engines are built by Avco-Lycoming. This United States company is one of the world's most respected aerospace companies. The engine design is further backed by millions of miles of proven flying reliability. Landings you'll hardly notice The Smiliner is designed for smooth landing approaches and soft, jolt-free touchdowns. That high wing configuration requires no leading-edge flaps - so that the plane comes in level, not tail-down. There's no screaming reverse-thrust of the engines once the Smiliner kisses the runway. And a unique trailing-arm landing gear suspension, coupled with super-flexible shock absorbers, makes it hard to believe you've actually touched ground. All this comfort - and incredible efficiency, too. The startling fact is that the Smiliner not only lands smmother and softer, but in a shorter distance than almost any other commercial aircraft flying. Almost too quiet to be a jet In terms of noise abatement, this new Smiliner is going to be the best friend ecology has ever had. Fact: it easily meets or beats all existing and planned noise-abatement regulations. Fact: it's a stunning 80 per cent quieter than the next quietest commercial jet on take-off. Fact: it's been certified by the F.A.A. as the quietest jetliner in the air. A pedigree of excellence The Smiliner is designed and backed by British Aerospace - the company that gave the aviation world the supersonic Concorde and such earlier flying legends as the immortal Spitfire fighter of World War II. No wonder the Smiliner bristles with high performance features - from its automatic back-up systems, to wing skins that are milled from a single piece of metal then bonded together for astonishing structural strength. Performance proven The ruggedly designed plane PSA calls the Smiliner is currently in regular service on some of the most demanding routes in the world. It's flying passengers and freight in and out of a 4,000 foot landing strip in remote Alaska - the only commercial jet that can do it. It's serving 14 isolated communities in the steaming jungle terrain of northern Brazil. It's a familiar sight at such unfamiliar airline destinations as Dakar and Brazzaville and even Timbuktu, in remotest Africa. It's also the only commercial jet the tidy Swiss will allow to land at their capital city of Berne. And soon the Smiliner will be flying the routes of PSA, and opening new routes. Helping fulfill PSA's long-standing commitment to operate the most modern possible equipment, with the most frequent and convenient possible flights, at the most affordable possible rates. We look forward to welcoming you aboard the Smiliner soon.
