Skylines
Employee communication is a proud old tradition of PSA. At times, it was necessary to have a periodical to keep the airlines employees up to date on what management was doing but mostly it was about the happenings at the various stations with just a little gossip thrown in.
Way back in the early 1940's, the folks who worked at Friedkin Aeronautics at Lindbergh Field in San Diego were a tight-knit bunch and everybody knew every one else. They shared their sack lunches, cried and exulted at the occasions in every employees life and stuck together like glue.
When PSA was formed and began to grow in other areas of California, it was harder to know who was who, who was where and what was going on in their daily lives. Airline co-founder Jean Friedkin was the mother-hen to all the PSA "chicks" and she missed being in touch. As a result, in October 1953, she started putting out a type-written mimeographed newsletter that included what everyone was doing. Soon, she had correspondents from around the state offering up their columns on things that were going on in their neck of the woods.
After some years, this newsletter soon grew into a handsomely printed, professional-looking newspaper that still contained the same information and was wholeheartedly supported by management. Mostly written in the Public Relations office from items gleaned from all the stations, it was printed in the PSA print shop and circulated by mail to the employees.
From Jeans' hilarious tidbits on mimeographed typing paper to a professionally produced newspaper. Skylines has been a means to keep the PSA family informed and in touch. We would like to do the same thing with this electronic medium.
